Over the weekend, another prediction was submitted for the University of Florida to land Lakeland (Fla.) star cornerback Cormani McClain.

It was made by On3 National Recruiting Analyst, Sam Spiegelman, who is based in New Orleans but keeping close tabs on McClain’s recruitment. His confidence level for the prediction sits at 65 percent.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Gators are trending heavily with odds of 95.3 percent. Alabama and Miami are the additional finalists for the No. 1-ranked cornerback; however, sources throughout the industry believe it would be a major surprise if McClain ended up anywhere but Gainesville, especially since the Crimson Tide have not played host since June.

Charles Power, On3’s Director of Scouting and Rankings, compares the superstar defensive back to recent top-five draft pick, Sauce Gardner, who is manufacturing a stellar rookie season for the New York Jets.

“Cormani McClain is more highly touted than Sauce Gardner was as a recruit, but we see some similarities in the slender build and ball skills. Both showed the ability to make plays on the ball while starring at defensive back and wide receiver for their respective teams,” said Power.

“McClain checks in at 6-foot-1.5 and around 165 pounds, while Gardner was 6-foot-2, 159 pounds as a recruit. McClain runs a bit faster in the combine setting as a recruit, while Gardner added considerable speed in his time at Cincinnati.”

The Five-Star Plus+ cornerback will be revealing his decision this Thursday at The RP Funding Center in Lakeland, Florida. The commitment ceremony kicks into gear at 6:00 p.m. EST and is expected to last roughly two hours.

Scouting Report on Cormani McClain

“Has the best combination of stature, athleticism and ball skills among cornerback prospects in the 2023 cycle. Measured over 6-foot-1 prior to his junior season and has posted some of the best testing numbers in a combine setting we’ve seen from prospects in his cycle.

A twitchy, bouncy athlete with explosive movement patterns. Pairs that athleticism with high end skill on the field. Has proven to be a ballhawk defender with nine interceptions as a sophomore and five picks midway through his junior season.

Uses his quickness to stay in-phase with receivers off the line and long speed to turn and run downfield. Highly instinctual and plays fast. Breaks on the ball quickly. Comfortable playing off and press coverage. Doubles as a receiver, which aids in his ball skills and coordination.

Would be a four-star type talent at receiver if he chose. Has a thinner frame at 165 pounds and will need to continue adding bulk. Older for the class.” — Charles Power, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings
