GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson was named Wednesday as the Davey O’Brien Award National Quarterback of the Week for week one of the college football season.

Richardson was named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 List on Tuesday, which recognizes exceptional play by quarterbacks across the country. With his inclusion on the season opening list, he is officially added to the Davey O’Brien Midseason Watch List.

The Gainesville native set career-highs on Saturday in passing yards (168) and rushing touchdowns (three), including the go-ahead score with 1:25 remaining. Richardson is the third UF quarterback since 1996 to rush for three touchdowns and pass for 150-plus yards in the same game, joining Jesse Palmer and Tim Tebow (twice).

During his Monday press conference, Florida coach Billy Napier evaluated Richardson’s first career start at home, which earned him SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

“I thought the decision-making in the game was pretty good. I thought made one bad decision in the game, and that was third-10 where he forced the ball into coverage. He should have thrown an interception, truth be known. Outside of that, I thought the management of the game, decision-making of the game was good,” Napier said. “A few things we’d do maybe a little bit different. A little jittery early on, made a few mistakes, but ultimately, he operated well.

“He rose to the occasion is what I would say. That’s what I saw. I saw a guy who is prepared behind the scenes, is a product of his work, and it showed up. … And then you’ve got the physical ability to go along with that. You see that, but there’s a lot of good quarterback plays on the film, but there’s also a lot of things that he knows he got away with that he needs to clean up.”

Richardson joins Davey O’Brien Midseason Watch List

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.2 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
