With July 4th coming up, the Gators football team is about to take a break from summer workouts for Independence Day.

Florida started phase five of its year-round football calendar, called Regimen, on May 25. UF coach Billy Napier identified 18 team captains for this phase and has been pleased with the leadership he’s seen from those players so far.

During his interview on 1010XL this week, Napier also complimented his off-the-field staff members for their work this offseason.

“We’re in our summer regimen, essentially you’re getting ready to move right into training camp. This is phase five, training camp is phase six, in-season is seven, and postseason is eight. So, we’re moving right along. It’s the first time for each one of these things, not only with the staff but with the players. But I can’t complement our staff enough,” Napier said.

“I think we’ve got really good people in all those areas from a leadership standpoint, right? Mark Hocke, Kelsee Gomes, Paul Silvestri, Joe Danos. All the people in performance have done a really good job. And I think the summer is a big piece to the puzzle. So, good people, and certainly, excited about what I see so far.”

Summer workouts have included team lifts, running stadiums and speed exercises in the indoor practice facility where players ran with a chain harness around their waist. The Regimen phase is a nine-week training block to get the Gators ready for fall camp.

The Napier era begins on Sept. 3 with a night game in The Swamp against defending Pac-12 Champion Utah. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN.

“We gotta consumed with the things that are going to help us be well prepared, play with confidence and execute at a high level,” Napier said. “Oftentimes I tell the players, everybody wants to win on gameday, right? But it’s about what we do between now and then to prepare. So, I think the key here is that we get to a position where we can go play fast and with confidence, and the only way to do that is with elite preparation. Our guys are in the middle of that. We try to break up the year for them so they can stay focused. We’ve got work to do right now to get ready for that opportunity.”
