Billy Napier set to be inducted into Furman Athletics Hall of Fame
Florida Gators football head coach Billy Napier was announced as a part of the Furman University Athletics 2022 Hall of Fame Class on Tuesday.
He will be inducted alongside former Furman women’s golf coach Mic Potter and former Furman women’s golfer Taylor Totland.
The school described Billy Napier as “a football quarterback who helped engineer one of the greatest seasons in school history.”
Napier was a four-year letterman from 1999-2002 who started his final two seasons (24 games) at Furman while winning the Southern Conference Championship in ‘99, ‘00 and ‘01. He helped the Paladins to four FCS playoff appearances with a 38-13 overall record in his four seasons there.
As a junior, Napier led the Paladins to a FCS National Championship appearance with a 12-3 record. That season, he earned the first of his two All-SoCon selections while throwing for 1,772 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Quickly after departing from Furman, Napier’s college coaching career began. He had stints as an assistant at Clemson, South Carolina State, Alabama, Colorado State and Arizona State.
His first head coaching job came at Louisiana where he finished with a 40-12 overall record with two Sun Belt Conference championships before being named the Florida Gators football coach on Nov. 28, 2021.
“We are honored to announce the 2022 Furman University Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2022,” Furman athletics director Jason Donnelly said. “This heralded class represents the extraordinary achievements of our alumni, student-athletes, and coaches and is the highest honor a Furman Paladin can achieve. Congratulations to the inductees, their teammates, and families. We look forward to celebrating and honoring them.”
A date, location and time for Napier’s and the rest of the 2022 Furman Athletics Hall of Fame class have yet to be announced.
