GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Redshirt freshman Kamar Wilcoxson has left the Florida Gators football program. A source told Gators Online that Wilcoxson didn’t attend meetings or practice on Wednesday. He was not listed on Florida’s depth chart for the Texas A&M game as a result.

“I appreciate the University of Florida and everyone throughout the organization for the help and care I received while being at UF. I overcame a lot of obstacles in my life that have built the courage and drive I have in me to this day,” Wilcoxson wrote on Twitter. “Thank you Coach Mullen and Grantham for taking me in and treating me like one of your own. Thank you to all my teammates for the relationships we’ve built and memories we’ve created. From coming in and winning the SEC East and competing in the SEC Championship, I’m grateful for it all.

“Thanks Coach Napier and his staff for everything they taught me since January. I want Gator Nation to know there wasn’t anything I wouldn’t have done for this logo. However sometimes the best thing to do in life is reset and figure things out. With that being said I will be entering my name in the transfer portal looking to seek a new home.”

The redshirt freshman from Lithonia, Georgia transferred to IMG Academy and was originally a member of the 2021 recruiting class. Wilcoxon would reclassify and enroll at Florida in 2020.

Wilcoxson played in just one game as a freshman while taking a redshirt. Wilcoxson suffered a knee injury in 2021 that sidelined him for the season. Over the summer, Wilcoxson spoke to Steve Russell of ESPN Gainesville/WRUF about that time.

“Throughout that time and as we speak I realized how important mental health was. And if you don’t put a big focus on your mental health it would be so easy for it to slip from you. I just want to be a person to help people through that because I went through mental (health) issues and that’s not fun.”

Wilcoxson not the first Gator to leave

Wilcoxson is the third Gator to start the season and not see it through. Offensive lineman Joshua Braun left the team in order to complete his degree and enter the transfer portal. Outside linebacker Brenton Cox was dismissed from the team.

“Brenton, we kind of decided to move on here,” Napier said. “I think that being a football player at the University of Florida is a privilege, right? There are certain expectations and standards that come with that. Obviously, he has done a lot of good things for the University of Florida, and we wish him nothing but the best. But sometimes, you have to make decisions in the best interest of the team. Certainly, with Brenton, we’re certainly going to do everything in our power to help him with his transition.”

The transfer portal continues to change how freely players can move schools. While there have been three in the season, there will surely be more Gators to enter the transfer portal at the season’s end.
