Former Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson was benched following the Indianapolis Colts’ 23-20 loss to Houston in Week 8. He was replaced by veteran Joe Flacco.

Now, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Richardson is back in the starting lineup and will play in the Week 11 matchup against the New York Jets.

Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, has completed 59-of-133 passes for 958 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions in six games this season. He has also rushed 242 yards and another score. Indianapolis is 3-3 with him as the starter.

On Monday, Colts head coach Shane Steichen shared insight on where Richardson is as a player.

“You’ve gotta go through the process every single day,” Steichen said of Richardson. “And that’s where it’s at. He’s a great person, phenomenal human being. Like I said, not ever losing faith or trust in him. We’re going through a process right now, and that’s where it’s at.”

This benching shouldn’t ruin Anthony Richardson

John Rich, Barstool SportsI will never understand why people think benching a rookie quarterback, in this case Anthony Richardson, for however many games early in his career is some sort of death sentence. Why does seeing what Joe Flacco can do for a few games mean the Colts have completely given up on Richardson? He’s 22 years old. He has so much football ahead of him.

I’m sorry, but if sitting the bench for a few games during the regular season, or even the entire second half of the season for that matter, is what kills Anthony Richardson’s development… if Anthony Richardson’s psyche is that weak that he can’t mentally recover from that… then he was never going to be make it in the first place.

Maybe the Anthony Richardson lottery ticket were holding that’s down to it’s last couple scratches will end up being a winner. The awesome thing is, just because he’s benched at this particular moment doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll never get to find out.
