Danny Wuerffel meets with Billy Napier, speaks to Gators football team
Florida coach Billy Napier and his football team had a special guest on campus this week: Heisman Trophy winner and Gator Great Danny Wuerffel.
The former UF quarterback was in Gainesville for FWAA’s Steve Spurrier Award for First-Year Head coaches, which was presented at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grill. Prior to Monday night’s ceremony, Wuerffel spent the day visiting with Napier and addressed the players.
Wuerffel returned to the football facilities Tuesday to spend more time around team.
“What a privilege to invest in @GatorsFB the past 2 days,” Wuerffel tweeted Wednesday. “Honored to share how the best leaders are good listeners and pay close attention to how everyone is doing around them. If you are too wrapped up in your own story, you are missing opportunities to be a good leader.”
Florida football’s official Twitter account posted a video Wednesday of Wuerffel’s speech to the team.
“When you think about the way we spend our time, the way that we use the money that we have, the way that we use the talents that we’re given, most of us think of those assets as if they’re mine and they’re for me. And I think of the most important kind of changes in a human being’s life is when they recognize that life is not about just you. You’re not like, the grand character. Because if you were, it’s a real small story,” Wuerffel said.
“Point No. 2 is you’re not that important. We live in a culture where everything is about how big you are. But none of you is more important than anyone else in the world. The best thing you can do is be the best teammate you can be. If you get a group of people together that actually believe that it’s not about you and no one of you is that important, magic can happen.”
Florida football’s account also shared a photo of Napier and Wuerffel together in the indoor practice facility, where the Gators are conducting the second phase of their offseason program.

“Always an honor to have Gator Great @DannyWuerffel in the building! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with our team today,” the account tweeted.
Wuerffel replied to the photo with a quote tweet.
“The honor was all mine! Thank you for having me @coach_bnapier,” he said.
Danny Wuerffel’s second visit this month
Monday marked Wuerffel’s second time visiting the football program in February.
Wuerffel was also on campus on Feb. 10 and hung out with several coaches and players. He shared photos with Chief Borders, Donovan McMillon, Rashad Torrence II and Ja’Markis Weston, as well as co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney, cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond and outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson, Wuerffel’s teammate at UF.
Wuerffel received a tour from quality control coach Ty Darlington, who won the Wuerffel Trophy in 2015 as a senior center at Oklahoma. The Wuerffel Trophy, established in 2005, is an annual award given to the player who combines community service with athletics and academics.
Wuerffel has been a vocal supporter of Napier since he landed the Florida job, congratulating him on Twitter after he signed a top-25 class on Feb. 2.
“Really excited by what @coach_bnapier is building,” Wuerffel tweeted.
