GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators legend Danny Wuerffel is turning the transfer portal into something positive this holiday season. On Wednesday, the Florida Heisman winner and National Champion took to X (formerly Twitter) with an offer for Gators fans.

“Any Gator fans wanting to trade their 7 jersey from this season for a timeless, autographed 7 Wuerffel jersey? My foundation will donate to the first 10 fans who DM @wuerffelfdn. Happy New Year and #GoGators!”

The chance to get a signed jersey from a Heisman winner and National Champion is one that will certainly get the attention of Gator fans.

Wuerffel was responding to a tweet that was asking, in lieu of Trevor Etienne transferring to Georgia, would fans be less inclined to purchase player-specific gear?

On June 12, 2020, Florida passed a law granting NIL (name, image, and likeness) rights to college athletes with an effective date of July 1, 2021, the earliest of any state law at this point. Student-athletes are now able to profit from their name, image, and likeness and one of the more popular ways has been schools and players selling player-specific jerseys.

On the website, Athlete’s Thread (a company that is a licensed vendor and created by a Florida alum), a black Trevor Etienne jersey was the third most popular Florida Gators item, behind two items depicting Ricky Pearsall’s one-handed catch against Charlotte in 2023.

With players being able to transfer freely now, some fans who want to support the student-athletes will be left with hundreds of dollars in player-specific merchandise of players who no longer attend the school they cheer for.

Wuerffel is taking the opportunity to turn a negative situation into a positive one.
