Injury update on DJ Lagway's status for LSU week
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators coach Billy Napier provided an update Monday on freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. He missed his first game of the season at Texas with a hamstring injury.
Lagway was listed as questionable last week and a game-decision decision Saturday. He went through pregame warmups before being ruled out, but Lagway will be back on the practice field Monday.
He’s currently day-to-day, according to Napier.
“The good thing is we worked him out this morning and we felt good about what we saw,” Napier said of Lagway on Monday. “Now, does that mean he’s 100 percent? I don’t know. Soft tissue is a very subjective injury. I think it’s day to day, but we do anticipate him practicing today.”
Lagway returned to practice last Wednesday but in a limited capacity. He continued to progress as the game approached and Saturday was the best he felt all week, Napier said. Redshirt freshman walk-on QB Aidan Warner made his first career start at Texas with Lagway out.
“I think that he got better each day (this week). A little bit better with each opportunity,” Napier said after the game of Lagway’s recovery. “I do think that he probably felt as good as he’s felt since the injury pregame. That’s kind of what he voiced to me.
“But not quite ready. I think there was risk with putting him out there with a soft-tissue injury. All of the metrics said he’s not quite ready to do it, but we’re hopeful. He’s made some progress and we’ll get a good feel for it early next week.”

Through eight games, Lagway has completed 60.9% of his pass attempts (56 of 92) for 1,071 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. He had five completions of 40-plus yards in each of his first two starts — and no other UF quarterback has accomplished that feat in a game in the last 20 years — and threw a 43-yard TD pass against Georgia.
Lagway was part of a two-quarterback system with Graham Mertz before his season-ending injury at Tennessee. Lagway led the Gators to a 48-20 win over Kentucky with 305 total yards in his first SEC start. He set the single-game school record for most passing yards (456) by a Florida true freshman quarterback in the 45-7 win over Samford.
