Q&A with DJ Lagway, Myles Graham
On the offensive issues after the two TD drives:
DJ LAGWAY: “Yeah, just the execution, you know. I say execution, and we just have to execute as an offense and be more consistent. My biggest thing is start fast, stay consistent and finish strong. Started fast, we weren’t consistent and we didn’t finish strong, so we got a lot of things that we’ve got to clean up as an offensive group. Like, we gotta stay on the field on third down. I feel like that’s a main focus that’s going to be next week, and to focus on things like that and just execute.”
On what caused Forida’s third-down woes:
DJ LAGWAY: “Third-and-long is tough to be in. I’d say just all that kind of goes into what we do on first and second down. We’ve got to have better first down efficiency, better second down efficiency, and stay out of the third-and-longs and try to keep it third and manageable. And once we get in those third-and-longs, we got to just be able to execute and be clicking on all cylinders. You can’t go 10-for-11, because if you go 10-for-11, it could be a pick, a big sack. So, I’d just say we all gotta click at the same time, and we weren’t clicking, especially on third downs.”
On what worked offensively in the first quarter:
DJ LAGWAY: “I’d say just our RPO game, you know, getting the ball out quick, you know, when they came up, getting them over the top and taking them deep. I feel like that was a great way we started the game and it felt good.”
On not being able to capitalize when it was a one-score game:
DJ LAGWAY: “It’s very disappointing, you know. Kudos to the defense. They kept battling and I feel like just overall we got to play better complementary football, you know. We started out fast, they had a little slow start, but then they picked it up and we were kind of going downhill. But I just feel like we gotta play good ball all at the same time and that’s where the magic happens.”
On how tough the loss is to swallow with it being his homecoming:
DJ LAGWAY: “Man, this is gut-wrenching. I can’t imagine how I feel right now, this is not how I expected this night to go, and we’ve just got to get back to work, that’s all I can say.”
On his message to the team at the midway point of the season:
DJ LAGWAY: “I kind of told my guys on the offensive side, especially, I’m not comfortable with this losing stuff. I don’t rock with the losing. I don’t like that. We can’t get comfortable with this. It’s not, it’s not acceptable. And I feel like there’s a lot of guys responding to that, and it’s not acceptable, and I’m tired of it, and I can’t go on like this. We got to fix it. And it starts with me. I gotta demand the tempo. I got to demand excellence out of everybody, and forget feelings. It’s all business at the end of the day. We got to get to work, got to have hard conversations, and we got to fix some things.”
On what his emotions are after the latest loss:
DJ LAGWAY: “I’m frustrated. This ain’t acceptable. I’m tired of it. This ain’t our brand of football. It’s not what we’re coached to do. This is not how we are supposed to play our brand of football. We just gotta execute. And it’s frustrating when we don’t execute.”

On UF having three road losses vs. top 5 teams:
DJ LAGWAY: “It’s really not about everybody. It’s not about the team that we’re playing. It’s about us. We’re beating ourselves, quite honestly, like we’re beating ourselves. We shouldn’t have penalties and being in first and 30. That’s ridiculous. We gotta fix some things internally. That’s basically it.”
On the defense’s poor start to the game:
MYLES GRAHAM: “We just, we weren’t ready to play. Just the whole game, we have to get off the field on third down, that was the issue for us today and we just got to start fast, like you said. That wasn’t our brand of football, we feel like that wasn’t who we are. We picked it up at the end of the game so I’m proud of how we fought, but we have to start better. I feel like that game’s on us because we did not start out fast, and then we got in a hole that was hard to get out of, so we have to do better.”
On what changed on defense after the first three drives:
MYLES GRAHAM: “Man, it wasn’t a change in scheme, it wasn’t a change of anything. We just had to look ourselves in the mirror and ask ourselves who we wanted to be, man, that wasn’t us. And we felt like we were letting the offense down and that was a problem. We had been asking for the offense to play like that the whole year and they came through, and we let them down, so that’s an issue for us, so we had to go at halftime and fix that. Yeah man, we just had to adjust.”
On what problems Marcel Reed caused with his mobility:
MYLES GRAHAM: “Yeah, we did not do a good job of containing him. He’s obviously very dangerous with his legs, and we have to stay in our rush lanes and contain him in the pocket. He converted on third down. He got upfield on us, and that’s a big issue for us. We talked about that during the week and we just didn’t execute. We didn’t execute our plan. We didn’t do our job. Everybody didn’t do their 1 of 11 and it showed.”
On what his emotions are after the latest loss:
MYLES GRAHAM: “I feel like we worked too hard for these outcomes. I feel like we came too far for these outcomes. I feel like we bled together. The whole offseason we worked together. I told him after the game, I’m backing no matter what, so we just don’t keep fighting.”
On UF having three road losses vs. top 5 teams:
MYLES GRAHAM: “We’re close, but close ain’t good enough, man. We’re right there every single game, but it’s not good enough. So we just got to play complementary football, man, and finish. We got to finish strong, man, and just because their Top 5 teams don’t mean nothing, we want to play every team the same. We want to come out and play our brand of football. We haven’t been doing that. So that’s a big issue that we need to fix.”
