GAINESVILLE, Fla. — It’s spring break at the University of Florida, but Gators starting quarterback DJ Lagway is still putting in work this week. And his workout partner is one of his predecessors.

Lagway is in Jacksonville training with former Florida QB Anthony Richardson, now with the Indianapolis Colts. It’s the first time Lagway and Richardson have worked together, according to their agent, Deiric Jackson.

However, they talk football quite often and their relationship dates back to Lagway’s recruitment when Richardson played for Gators. Lagway committed to UF two days after Richardson declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, where he was the No. 4 pick.

There aren’t many quarterbacks that look big standing next to the 6-foot-4, 244-pound Richardson, but Lagway actually appears to have some size on him despite being listed as an inch shorter and three pounds lighter (6-3, 241).

Jackson posted a photo Wednesday with DJ Lagway, Anthony Richardson and Dr. Tom Gormely. Gormely is the co-founder of CORTX Sports Performance, a facility that offers comprehensive sports science and performance training systems.

Gormely is a distinguished leader in the sports performance and rehabilitation industry, recognized for his expertise in applied biomechanics, throwing development, and arm injury rehabilitation. He’s helping Lagway with his recovery.

Lagway is dealing with a shoulder injury and hasn’t thrown the ball during Florida’s spring camp. UF coach Billy Napier provided an update on him last week.

“We’ve got a really detailed plan. I think we laid that out,” Napier said. “I think the key and I kind of took some notes in practice there while he’s going through this process. I think it’s important that we challenge him. We still have to have a daily plan to keep him engaged. I think right now he’s communicating with the other quarterbacks. He’s calling in the plays in some periods, which is healthy. Seeing it from a different perspective. And then I do think that he’s getting back into his rhythm physically.

“But in general, I think it provides a great opportunity for the other players. Aidan [Warner], Harrison [Bailey] and Tramell [Jones], all three are getting significant reps and doing a really good job. You can see the incremental improvement with all three guys that are all obviously still young players. Really if you think about it, Aidan missed all the spring last year, so he’s still relatively young.”
