Perfect start with 49ers vaults former Gator Eddy Piñeiro into NFL history

Former Florida Gators kicker Eddy Piñeiro is quietly putting together one of the best stretches of his NFL career, and one of the best careers by any kicker, period.

Now with the San Francisco 49ers, Piñeiro ranks No. 2 on the NFL’s all-time list for field-goal accuracy at 89.4%, trailing only the Chargers’ Cameron Dicker (94.6%). His near-perfect start in San Francisco has provided stability for a team that’s been searching for consistency.

Piñeiro joined the 49ers in Week 2 after they moved on from struggling kicker Jake Moody, and he’s been flawless since. The former Gator has made his first 15 field-goal attempts this season, matching Robbie Gould’s franchise record for most consecutive makes to start a first season with the team.

The former Gator went 4-for-4 in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay, marking the second straight game he’s hit four field goals. That stretch also made him the first 49ers kicker since Gould in 2017 to do so in back-to-back games. His performance last week against the Rams, which included a career-long 59-yarder, earned him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Other than one missed extra point in Week 2, Piñeiro has been perfect. He’s quickly become one of the 49ers’ most reliable weapons, something coach Kyle Shanahan said he didn’t expect to find on the market.

“I’m not sure why he was available,” Shanahan said before Week 6. “The percentages look really good. I’m glad he was available.”

Before the NFL, Eddy Piñeiro was a standout at Florida from 2016–17 where he connected on 38-of-43 field goals for an impressive 88.4 percent success rate. That has him as one of the school’s most accurate kickers.

Now nearly a decade later, the former Gator is proving he’s one of the best in the world.
