Film Breakdown: Can Anthony Richardson take Napier's offense to the next level?
There is perhaps no player more popular or polarizing on the Florida Gators than Anthony Richardson.
The redshirt sophomore is from local Eastside High School. He chose to stay home at Florida rather than accept scholarship offers from Georgia, Penn State and Louisville, among others.
Richardson sat behind Kyle Trask and Emory Jones as a freshman. Then, in 2021, sat behind Jones again. With Emory Jones hitting the transfer portal this spring, the offense should be Richardson’s to run. Of course, Ohio State transfer Jack Miller will do his best to win the starting job. Still, based on what we’ve seen during open portions of practice, the job will be Richardson’s to lose.
Richardson bust on the scene in 2021. He recorded 160 rushing yards on seven carries and completed 3-of-8 passes for a total of 40 yards in the season opener. He also added a 73-yard touchdown run against FAU that week. Not to be outdone, Richardson logged 115 yards and a touchdown on four carries and completed 3-of-3 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns against South Florida (Sept. 11).
An 80-yard touchdown run would derail his season. Richardson aggravated a hamstring injury and missed the next two games, including a top-15 matchup with Alabama. The injury might have been caused by a lingering knee issue. Richardson said the trainers told him the injured knee could have affected his hamstring.
“The trainers talked about that. They think that could have tweaked it a little bit,” he said. They actually asked me this morning how I felt, and if I had the chance to do surgery again, would I? I said yes because I feel a lot better now.”
A healthy Anthony Richardson should excite Gators fans. Let’s break down the film and see what he can do in Napier’s offense.
