The Florida Gators quickly focused attention on Baylor defensive line transfer Brendan Bett this week after he entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal on Thursday. He started an official visit on Saturday morning, and things went so well that he committed to the Florida Gators that same evening. The Gators saw former defensive lineman D’Antre Robinson enter his name into the transfer portal earlier this week and later commit to North Carolina. His departure opened a need for depth at the position, and Florida moved swiftly to address it.

Brendan Bett was in line for an increased role this season at Baylor

The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder showed early promise as a freshman at Baylor. In his first year with the Bears, Bett played in 10 games and earned his first college start against Houston. He ended that season with nine tackles, including one sack and two pass break-ups. PFF graded him that season as the fourth-highest rated interior freshman defensive lineman in college football

In Bett’s sophomore season, he was deemed academically ineligible and did not play in the regular season. He redshirted that year, appeared in only the Bears’ Texas Bowl loss to LSU. When he arrives to enroll at UF, Bett will have three seasons left to play.

Past connections to Florida staff helped add Bett

There are prior connections in place with some of the staff at Florida with Bett. While previously on staff at Colorado, current Florida defensive line coach Gerald Chatman recruited him. Current Florida defensive coordinator Ron Roberts also has a past connection to Bett during his time on staff at Baylor. He was involved in recruiting Bett to Baylor, but departed the program right before he enrolled in Waco. The familiarity Bett has with both UF coaches helped expedite the process here.

Florida has now added a half-dozen transfers this offseason

With Bett now in the fold, he becomes the sixth transfer addition for the Gators this offseason. He joins winter transfer additions Harrison Bailey, J.Michael Sturdivant, Tommy Doman, Micheal Caraway Jr., and Kofi Asare. When combining both high school and transfer additions this offseason, the Gators have now brought in a total of 33 players.

On3 ranks Bett as a 3-star transfer prospect and No. 238 defensive lineman in the transfer rankings. He was also a 3-star recruit coming out of Killeen (TX) Ellison in the class of 2023. The On3 Industry, a weighted average of the four major recruiting services, ranked Bett as the No. 137 defensive lineman in the 2023 cycle.
