For much of the past month and a half, the Gators had been ranked No. 3 in the 2024 Industry Ranking Football Team Recruiting Rankings. This came after Billy Napier’s staff landed 10 commitments in June and already three this month; in fact, those trio of pledges all took place last week.

However, Florida is not the only program making a major splash on the recruiting front. June is arguably the most important month in recruiting and results all across the country are proving that.

With that said, team rankings are fluid and will fluctuate plenty between now and December.

As of today, the Gators have the No. 4-ranked class for the 2024 cycle.

They were bumped down a spot last night after top target and Carrollton (Ga.) pass catcher, Caleb Odom, announced his commitment to Alabama. That was enough for the Crimson Tide to overtake Florida for the No. 3 spot.

If I am Gators fan, however, this does not bother me at all. It would be different if they moved down the rankings due to a prospect reopening their recruitment, but UF is still ranked inside the top five with 20 prospects already in the fold. That number could very well expand in the near future as well.

Multiple five-star prospects lead the way for UF

The highest-ranked prospects in the class are Lone Star State natives Xavier Filsaime and DJ Lagway. Both rising seniors are five-star prospects in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking.

Filsaime, an elite defensive back from McKinney (Texas) High, is one of several Gators commits who have shut down their recruitment.

The Orlando native was offered at the start of the year and announced his commitment on April 13. That was the same day as the Orange and Blue Game. He will bring an instinctive style to the defense that should feature plenty of pad-popping hits.

With Lagway, a product of Willis (Texas) High, there is no drama surrounding his recruitment either.

The All-American signal caller is the face of UF’s class and plays a major role in recruiting. He pulled himself off the market last December and plans to play baseball for the Gators as well.

DJ Lagway is taking a business approach to recruiting

“It depends on the type of relationship I have with that person or not. Some people like that, to be on them about it but some people don’t. You have to figure out the person and the player and find out how they want to be communicated with,” Lagway previously said on the Gators Online Show when asked about his recruiting approach.

“I just really want to build a bond even if they didn’t come to Florida, and I wish that they did. But even if they didn’t, you still have that relationship with them. Because you never know, with the transfer portal, they could maybe end up right back at square one and choose Florida. I just want to build that relationship with those guys and get on a personal level so they can trust me and trust my word.

“I’m really excited about what the future holds. I definitely wanted to be part of what coach Napier is about to build and where this program is heading. I’m just thankful and honored to be a part of it.

“I’m ready to get down to Gainesville and get to work right away. Just come in and try to compete for a starting job, be a day-one leader and lead my teammates to success on and off the field.”
