GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators will be without several key starters on Saturday night when they host the Kentucky Wildcats. Florida’s final injury report ahead of its homecoming matchup with Kentucky included starting quarterback Graham Mertz, starting running back Montrell Johnson, as well as former starting defensive backs Ja’Keem Jackson and Asa Turner.

Sophomore safety Bryce Thornton was removed from the final injury report, meaning he would be available play on Saturday night but the safety is on the field in sweatpants, not dressed out for the game.

Without Johnson in the fold, the Gators will turn to sophomore running back Treyaun Webb, true freshman Jadan Baugh and redshirt junior Ja’Kobi Jackson in the running game. The Gators will also be without their starting long snapper, Rocco Underwood. Redshirt freshman Gannon Burt will handle long-snapping duties Saturday.

Graham Mertz aims to help DJ Lagway in any way he can

Mertz sustained a torn ACL in the Gators’ loss to Tennessee last week. The sixth-year senior quarterback will be on the sidelines helping Florida’s new starter, true freshman DJ Lagway.

“I’ll be there with an earpiece in, getting the calls. I think that my job, obviously, I’m not a coach. Let’s just throw it out there, but I’m here to be in any way, shape or form for DJ, for this quarterback room. I told him, whatever you need, if it’s someone to talk to about life, if it’s someone to talk to about what I’m seeing on the field. I’m not going to overstep, but I’m going to do everything I can to help, and I think that’s where – a lot of people,if they get hurt, and they’re like, No, I’m going to get in there. I’m gonna tell them everything I’m seeing. No, you can’t do that with quarterback,” Mertz told reporters on Wednesday.

“I think that being able to have that communication, like what are you feeling right now. If you throw a pick. Like, I’ve thrown picks in my college career, I know what the feeling is after that. I’ve fumbled on the 1-yard line. I know what the feeling is for that. Stuff like that, where it’s through my experiences, how can I help others in their current state, and how can I help them learn from what they did, whether it was good or bad, grow from it and keep going. So I think being able to have that balance of, okay, this is the football aspect, but you still got to go play the game, and I’m not going to get in the way and try to tell you what I would have done. No, I’m here to help with the points after that. I think that’s where my role is.”b
