For the first time in three years, the Southeastern Conference is hosting its spring meetings this week in Sandestin, Fla.

The SEC spring meetings begin on Tuesday and run through Friday, bringing together presidents and chancellors, athletic directors, football and men’s and women’s basketball coaches and other staff members from the league’s 14 member schools to meet with conference officials.

“I’ll behave just like I should as a rookie head coach around a lot of veteran coaches,” Florida football coach Billy Napier last said Thursday.

The SEC is expected to address a number of hot topics, including future conference scheduling, a potential All-SEC Playoff, and name, image and likeness. Golden shared his perspective on how NIL has impacted college basketball.

“I think basketball is a little behind football, to be honest. Not saying there isn’t programs who have navigated that space for a while now. It was really when the whole Miami story broke that it really got hot in our world of recruiting,” Golden said last Thursday.

“It hasn’t been a very big part of the discussions we’ve had with recruits, but we definitely anticipate over the next three to six to nine months that it’s going to be very important and very present. I’ll just say I’m excited to get down to the SEC Meetings and hear what the commissioner and the rest of the coaches have to say about it.”

Another elephant in the room this week will be the feud between Alabama coach Nick Saban and Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher over NIL.

“I think people tuned into that,” Napier joked. “I think that’s worthy of a subscription or a viewership. No, both are very accomplished. Both are passionate. Both are competitive. I think that it is what it is. We’ll leave that between them. I certainly don’t want to get in the middle of that conversation.”

Golden added, “I’m just going to sit there and listen.”
