Kaiir Elam is projected as a late first-round pick or early second-round selection in multiple mock drafts, but Florida’s star cornerback could hear his name called sooner than expected.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported late Wednesday night that Elam is generating a lot of buzz among teams as the opening round approaches.
“Kaiir Elam has been a very hot name these past few days among teams I’ve spoken with. Rising prospect whose size, length and toughness are all widely coveted. He’s also a very good tackler who can support the run. Equally important? He ran a blazing 4.39 40,” Schultz tweeted.
Elam has first-round projections from NFL.com (27th overall, Tampa Bay Buccaneers), CBS.com (22nd overall, Green Bay Packers), PFF.com (25th overall, Buffalo Bills), SI.com (25th overall, Buffalo Bills), and USA TODAY (31st overall, Cincinnati Bengals).

ESPN.com is one of the few sites that projects Elam as a second-round pick. The first round begins Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. It continues with Rounds 2 and 3 on April 29 and Rounds 4 through 7 on April 30.
If Elam is selected Thursday night, he will become just the sixth cornerback in school history to get drafted in the opening round and the 10th defensive back.
