Gators Co-DC Sean Spencer praises Brenton Cox Jr. for changing his body

Florida co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Sean Spencer knows an NFL-caliber player when he sees one.
Spencer spent the past two seasons as the defensive line coach for the New York Giants. Coach Chaos also sent several players to league during his time at Penn State.
And while he doesn’t work directly with Gators outside linebacker Brenton Cox Jr., Spencer said he looked like an NFL player during spring ball.
“He was a real muscle-bound kid in the spring,” Spencer said of Cox on Tuesday. “I looked at him, I said, ‘Wow, he’s really big.’ He did look like an NFL football player.”
Cox still has the NFL in his future but doesn’t look the same anymore. He reported to fall training camp in the best shape of his career and appears quicker with his pass rush.

Cox’s offseason conditioning plan was built around getting leaner and more agile.
“That guy’s done an incredible job changing his body type,” Spencer said of Cox. “He’s really changed his body and leaned up, slimmed down. I tell the guys all the time, especially in my room, that guy is a professional in the way he handles himself day-in and day-out. He is going to work at his craft. He is constantly changing what he does and evaluating it. So, I’m excited about that.”
Cox was named Monday to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, presented annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year.
