The Florida Gators expect big things from receiver Ricky Pearsall in 2023. And they aren’t alone.

Pearsall, a senior, has been named to the watch list for the 87th Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. The Maxwell Award is one of the most prestigious honors in college football; it has been given to the college player of the year annually since 1937.

Pearsall recorded 33 catches for 661 yards and five touchdowns last season, his first with the Gators after transferring from Arizona State.

Pearsall is excited to have an expanded role in 2023. He’s the highest-graded returner on offense, per PFF. Pearsall is the lone returning starter at his position, but he’ll also start on special teams.

At SEC Media Days, Pearsall told Gators Online he’s now going to return punts.

“I’m taking it over. For sure,” Pearsall told Zach Abolverdi of Gators Online. “We were doing punt returns and I just ran down the field telling people, ‘This is what I’m most excited for.’ I always knew I could return punts. It’s in the blood. My dad used to return punts in college.”
