Florida Gators release depth chart for game vs No. 12 Utah Utes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — It’s game week for the Florida Gators and No. 12 Utah Utes. That means we get depth charts from both teams. Although Nick Saban declined to release a depth chart for the Crimson Tide’s opening game, UF head coach Billy Napier did release a depth chart for the Gators.

We already knew that Graham Mertz would lead the Gators at quarterback but were there any surprises on the depth chart?

Notes

  • True freshman Jordan Castell was listed as a starting safety next to sophomore Miguel Mitchell.
  • Senior Ricky Pearsall, sophomore Caleb Douglas, and redshirt sophomore Khaleil Jackson are listed as the starting receivers.
  • All three freshmen receivers are listed on the depth chart with Eugene Wilson and Aiden Mizell backing up Pearsall. Andy Jean is third string behind Douglas and redshirt sophomore Marcus Burke.
  • Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Tyreak Sapp is listed as the starter in place of redshirt sophomore Justus Boone. True sophomore Jack Pyburn will backup Sapp, while both are expected to be major contributors for the Gators this season.
  • Transfer portal additions Cam Jackson and Caleb Banks will start inside on the defensive line.
  • Jack Miller is listed as the Gators backup quarterback but is questionable to play in the game.
  • The starting offensive line had a shakeup with Richie Leonard starting at left guard and Micah Mazzccua starting at right guard. The pair had mostly worked on the other side during camp.
  • Senior center Kingsley Eguakun remains day-to-day with an ankle injury. Redshirt sophomore Jake Slaughter is listed as his backup and would start if Eguakun cannot go.
  • True freshman offensive lineman Knijeah Harris is listed as a backup at all three interior offensive line positions.
  • Redshirt senior Dante Zanders and freshman Tony Livingston are listed as the starting tight ends — Florida, however, has 12 starting positions with three receivers and two tight ends listed.
  • There were no “Or” listed between any players on offense.
  • The defense had 12 “OR” distinctions between players.
  • Redshirt junior Jaydon Hill and Senior Jadarrius Perkins will play STAR (nickel) but there was an “OR” between the two veterans.
  • Freshman running back Trevor Etienne is listed as the Gators starting kick returner with Jason Marshall, Montrell Johnson, and Eugene Wilson.
  • Eugene Wilson and Ricky Pearsall are listed as the Gators’ punt returners.
