Although it was somewhat expected, 4-star defensive lineman Joseph Mbatchou de-committed from the University of Florida on Monday afternoon.

Mbatchou, who attends Loganville (Ga.) Grayson, had been committed to the Florida Gators since July but has since taken numerous visits elsewhere. His social media post announcing the decision is below.

“After deep thought and prayer, I have decided to re-open my recruitment. I’d like to thank the entire staff at Florida and can’t wait to get back down there. I’m excited to finish this journey from a new perspective,” Mbatchou posted on social media.

With the senior defender back on the market, Florida’s class is now to 11 prospects and ranks 33rd nationally with On3. As we noted above though, this de-commitment should not surprise many, if any, as Mbatchou has been one of the more active prospects in terms of visiting schools.

This past weekend, Texas played host for an official visit. Before that, schools like Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina received in-season visits. Future official visits include Michigan (Oct. 26), Auburn (Nov. 2), Florida (Nov. 16), Tennessee (Nov. 23) and South Carolina (Nov. 30).

As for the Gators though, it’s not often when a prospect makes another commitment to the same school.

The Gators were the first major program to take a chance on Mbatchou over the summer despite the prospect having never played an official down of football. But once the losses starting stacking up and more offers arrived, the chances of him staying in the class started to fade. Now, here we are.

The 6-foot-4.5, 280-pounder is the No. 379 overall prospect in the 2025 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 33 defensive lineman and No. 49 recruit in the Peach State.
