On Tuesday, Gators EDGE Princely Umanmielen was named to the 2023 Lombardi Award Midseason Watchlist, as announced by the Lombardi Award and Rotary Club of Houston.

Back in August, the Texas native earned a spot on the Lombardi Award Preseason Watchlist.

“The Lombardi Award goes annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Vince Lombardi in addition to outstanding performance and ability.”

According to the Lombardi Award, in order to be under consideration for the award, the player must be an NCAA FBS College Football player with the following qualifications:

·         Be a down Lineman, end to end, either on offense or defense, setting up no further than ten (10) yards to the left or right of the ball at the time of the snap.

·         Be a Linebacker on defense, setting up no further than (5) yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

·         Must not come out of the offensive backfield and set up on the line of scrimmage as a blocker or receiver or listed in the program as an offensive back or receiver.

·         Be eligible to participate in the current season.

Umanmielen is one of 100 players under consideration for the award, with all 10 FBS conferences included.

Umanmielen is making a statement in year four

According to PFF, Umanmielen is responsible for three sacks, eight quarterback hits and 21 quarterback hurries for the 5-2 Gators. He has started all seven games for Austin Armstrong’s unit.

During Saturday’s victory at South Carolina, Umanmielen logged a sack and three quarterback hurries.

This season, Umanmielen is UF’s highest-graded defensive player who has played more than 10 snaps. He is also the fifth highest-rated player in pass rush grade of Division I EDGE Defenders.

“I think Armstrong just really trust his players. Like, he really shows us that he trusts us. He’s not gonna go out there and rely on his scheme. He, you know, relies on the player. He tells us all the time, ‘Good players make good defenses,’” Umanmielen said.

“So, you know, when he’s calling plays, he’s calling plays based off the players he’s got and trying to do it to their strengths. He’s not calling plays relying on the scheme. You know, he really has a lot of trust in us. And he shows that in his play-calling.”

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Umanmielen was a four-star prospect and the 15th-ranked EDGE in the 2020 class. He was also the 254th-ranked prospect overall.
