Billy Napier and the Gators just hit the jackpot, as Tampa (Fla.) Catholic cornerback Jameer Grimsley committed to the program.
Florida was a finalist the first time around but fell short when Grimsley stayed put and signed with the Crimson Tide in December; however, after Nick Saban announced his retirement, the defensive back entered the transfer portal on Jan. 18 and now the rest is history.
“This was all God’s plan. Everything happened for a reason,” Grimsley told On3’s Chad Simmons. “The way it was set up was meant to be. Now I get to play for my dream school. Florida is a great school, I am from Florida and I am committing to a school I feel good about.
“Now, you have to commit to a school, not a coach. You have to love the school.”
Once Grimsley reopened his recruitment, all signs pointed to the childhood favorite Gators and understandably so. They made a strong case leading up to National Signing Day, especially after Grimsley’s official visit, and were the clear No. 2 option if Alabama did not win out.

Now, here we are.
According to the 2024 On300 rankings, Grimsley was the 100th-ranked senior and 15th-ranked cornerback in his class. He also finished as the 22nd-ranked senior in Florida.
“He said I was a priority,” Grimsley previously said of Napier. “They need guys to try to make Florida, you know, become the Florida what they used to be, winning the SEC East, competing for national championships. That’s what he’s trying to bring back. He thinks I could be a part of something special if I come play for him.
With Grimsley on board, the Gators continue to stockpile talent in the secondary.
Those include Tulane transfer DJ Douglas, Oregon transfer Trikweze Bridges, On3 4-star safety Gregory Smith, 3-star safety Josiah Davis, and 3-star cornerback Teddy Foster.
