America’s Team will have some Gator flavor as the Dallas Cowboys have hired former Florida Gators quarterback Brian Schottenheimer as head coach. Per ESPN, Dallas owner Jerry Jones has made Schottenheimer the 10th coach in franchise history.

The network noted, “Schottenheimer, 51, joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a consultant, working mostly with former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. When Moore left for the Los Angeles Chargersafter McCarthy decided to take over the play-calling duties, he was hired as the offensive coordinator.”

Schottenheimer, affectionately known as “Schotty” by his coach at Florida, Steve Spurrier, was a backup for the Gators from 1994-96. He was part of three SEC championship teams, and the 1996 national title winners. During his career at Florida, Schottenheimer completed 25 of 38 passes for 290 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown. Schottenheimer graduated from UF with a degree in exercise and sports science in 1997.

Since leaving Gainesville, he has had various coaching stops in both college and the NFL. He once even was offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach for Florida’s arch-rivals, Georgia, in 2015.

Per ESPN, “Schottenheimer’s father, Marty, was the head coach of the Cleveland BrownsKansas City Chiefs, Washington and San Diego Chargers. Marty Schottenheimer made the playoffs 18 times in 21 years as a coach and three times made it to the AFC Championship Game (twice with the Browns and once with the Chiefs). His 200 regular-season wins are seventh most in NFL history.” When Brian Schottenheimer played for the Gators, his famous father was spotted in Gainesville a time or two.

As noted, Dallas has only had 10 head coaches all time. And 20% of them once called Gainesville home. You see, Schottenheimer is not the first former Gators player to lead the Cowboys — or even the first former Gators quarterback. That would be Chan Gailey, who led Dallas to the playoffs in 1998 and 1999 — his only two seasons as coach of that organization. Gailey was a backup with coach Doug Dickey’s Gators in the early 1970s.
