Four-star QB Tramell Jones commits to Florida Gators
The Florida Gators have found their quarterback for the 2025 recruiting class. Tramell Jones, a 4-star prospect from Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin, has committed to UF to give Billy Napier & Co. a big — and much-needed — recruiting win. He de-committed from Florida State on Thursday.
Jones, listed at 6-foot and 195 pounds, is the No. 21 QB in the country for the On3 Industry Rankings. He had been committed to the Seminoles since April of 2023. He is commitment No. 13 for the Gators. Jones officially visited Florida over the weekend.
“I’ve been here a couple of times. I got to see the campus a little bit more, got to be around the guys,” Jones said. “Of course it was an official, so I got to be around the guys a little bit more, see the camaraderie, see what they have, see the bond they have. The last game I think I came to was I think when they played Tennessee, but shoot, it was loud.”
The overall highlight?
“I’d say the highlight of the weekend was of course was being in the Swamp, but also being able to spend that time with DJ (Lagway) and all the other players,” Jones said. “I wanted to see what the atmosphere and culture was with them, getting to see how they felt about the season, getting to see how they are outside of football. That was the biggest thing.”
Jones has played in only two games this season due to a leg injury. But for his four-year varsity career at Mandarin, he is 451-of-760 passing for 7,197 yards, 75 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
Jones started eight games as a freshman. As one might expect, there were some early struggles. But improvement came and came. So did offers. Florida was one of the earliest to get involved. By Year 2, Jones seemed to have a good command of the Mandarin offense. Then last fall, he led the team to the state finals.
“He’s a point guard,” Mandarin coach Toby Bullock said. “I think that probably gets overused for a lot of people but in our system, he really is. We’re a heavy RPO team. So he has a lot of post-snap choices. And he communicates well with his coaches. He’s easy to talk to. These are all things he does well. And he can spin the ball with anybody.”

In 2023, Jones had his best season from an accuracy standpoint when he completed 60.6 percent of his pass attempts for 3,195 yards, 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
“There are lots of big-named, big-armed QBs that can’t hit this or that consistently and I think it’s because they don’t understand that the whole premise starts with your feet and moves up,” Bullock said. “I think too many people focus on the arm, and move down and he’s the opposite of that.”
Intelligence and accuracy are among Jones’ greatest assets, according to the coach.
“He doesn’t have to throw a 60-yard bomb,” Bullock said. “Last year he threw for over 3,000 yards and I would imagine that probably 500 of it was over 15-yard passes. He distributes the ball — puts the ball in the athletes’ hands and that’s what the game is right now.”
In June, Jones announced he had “show down” his recruitment and would stick with FSU despite a big push this spring and summer from the Gators, who hosted him on multiple visits. But the Seminoles’ struggles this season (they’re currently 1-8) have made it difficult for that program to keep its recruiting class together. And now, FSU has lost a centerpiece — and Jones will be a Gator.
He joins a Florida recruiting class that includes 7-on-7 teammate and friend Vernell Brown III, a 4-star receiver.
