The Florida Gators will go into the NCAA Tournament playing their best golf of the season. UF on Sunday claimed the SEC men’s championship at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., by beating Texas A&M 4-1.

UF, ranked No. 9 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, beat No. 6 Oklahoma in the quarterfinals (3-2) and then rolled over second-ranked Auburn, the defending national champ, 3-1-1 in the semifinals. This came after the Gators placed fifth in the stroke play portion of the event. The top eight advanced to team match play.

How strong is the SEC this season? Six of the top 10 teams in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll are in the conference, including No. 1-ranked Texas, which lost to Auburn in the quarterfinals.

In the championship match, UF got individual wins from Luke Poulter (4&3), Matthew Kress (5&4), Zack Swanwick (1 up) and Ian Gilligan (2 up).

For the Florida Gators, this is SEC title No. 17 in men’s golf. The other championships came in 1955, 1956, 1968, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1985, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2003, 2011 and 2023. Of note, of the program’s five national title teams, all but one also won the SEC championship. One of those to win both the SEC and national championships was Florida’s 2023 squad.

This is SEC title No. 2 for Gators head coach J.C. Deacon.

Regional play in the NCAA Men’s golf tournament begins May 8. The NCAA championships are May 23-28, 2025 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
