Gators great Rex Grossman named SEC Legend

Rex Grossman is an all-time Florida Gators great. While quarterbacking the orange and blue, he was the AP College Football Player of the Year in 2001 and finished second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy that same season. Tuesday, the Southeastern Conference announced Grossman has been selected to the 2024 SEC Legends class. Per an official Florida Gators release, “The 2024 Football Legends class includes 16 former stars who excelled on the gridiron and helped write the rich history of the sport at their respective institutions, and is the first to include representatives from new members Oklahoma and Texas.”

Grossman joins the following players in the class:

  • Alabama – Barrett Jones, Offensive Lineman, 2009-12
  • Arkansas – Ken Hamlin, Free Safety, 2000-02
  • Auburn – Marcus McNeill, Offensive Tackle, 2002-2005
  • Georgia – Terrence Edwards, Receiver, 1999-2002
  • Kentucky – Dicky Lyons Sr., Tailback/Receiver/All-Purpose, 1966-68
  • LSU – Andrew Whitworth, Offensive Tackle, 2002-05
  • Ole Miss – Dexter McCluster, Running Back, 2006-09
  • Mississippi State – Fletcher Cox, Defensive Lineman, 2009-11
  • Missouri – Chase Daniel, Quarterback, 2005-08
  • Oklahoma – Barry Switzer, Head Coach, 1973-88
  • South Carolina – Corey Miller, Defensive End, 1987-90
  • Tennessee – Eric Berry, Defensive Back, 2007-09
  • Texas – Vince Young, Quarterback, 2002-05
  • Texas A&M – Luke Joeckel, Offensive Tackle, 2010-12
  • Vanderbilt – Ricky Anderson, Punter/Kicker, 1981-84

Rex Grossman was the SEC Player of the Year in 2001

Grossman, a native of Indiana, started his final 30 games at Florida and overall went 23-8 in a starting role. He was the starter in Steve Spurrier’s final season as Gators coach — and the starter in Ron Zook’s first season in Gainesville.

Per FloridaGators.com, Grossman is “the holder of 18 UF records — he completed 677 of 1,110 passes for 9,164 yards and 77 touchdowns in his career. Grossman had a school-record 17 career 300-plus yard passing games, and became the first Gator to throw for 300-plus yards in more than three consecutive games (first nine game of 2001) and he owns five of the top 16 single game passing yardage totals.”

Grossman left Florida after his junior season and was a first-round pick by the Chicago Bears (22nd overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft. He played nine NFL seasons and started for the Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

FloridaGators.com noted, “The class will be honored at the 2024 SEC Football ‘Weekend of Champions’ Dec. 6-7 in Atlanta, Ga, highlighted by the annual SEC Legends Celebration presented by T-Mobile on Friday, Dec. 6 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.  The group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 7.”
