Gators guard Walter Clayton named to mid-season watch list for prestigious hoops award
Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. is getting recognition for his solid play thus far in helping lead the No. 6 Gators to an 18-3 start. Clayton on Monday was named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year 10-player midseason watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced.
The award is named after six-time NBA champion Bob Cousy, a point guard for the Boston Celtics from 1950-63. Clayton was joined by the following players on the watch list:
Mark Sears, Alabama
Ryan Nembhard, Gonzaga
Keshon Gilbert, Iowa State
Kam Jones, Marquette
Ace Baldwin, Penn State
Braden Smith, Purdue
Dylan Harper, Rutgers
Zakai Zeigler, Tennessee
Javon Small, West Virginia
Clayton, a senior from Lake Wales, Fla., shifted from shooting guard to point guard this season and he leads the Gators in scoring (17.4 points per game), 3-point field goals (56 total) and assists (79 total). Meanwhile, Clayton its shooting 45 percent from the field, 35.9 percent from 3-point range and 86.4 percent from the foul line. And, he even averages 3.3 rebounds a game.

Per FloridaGators.com, “(Clayton) has six games with 25-plus points this season, earned MVP honors at November’s ESPN Events Invitational and is part of the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25.”
In his two seasons with the Gators, Clayton has 998 points in 57 games played. He scored 633 points in 36 games last season, good for fifth all time in a season by a Florida player. Clayton spent his first two seasons playing at Iona for then-coach Rick Pitino. There, he averaged 16.8 points a game as a sophomore before transferring to Florida. All told, Clayton has scored 1,769 points in 121 college games — good for a scoring average of 14.6.
The Gators (18-3, 5-3 in the SEC) play host to unranked Vanderbilt (16-5, 4-4) on Tuesday night.
