The Florida Gators basketball team continues to stand high in the NET rankings, the NCAA’s primary sorting tool for evaluating teams. Following a week in which coach Todd Golden’s squad lost at home to Missouri (83-82) but then beat Texas (84-60), Florida is at No. 5 in the NET entering Wednesday’s game at South Carolina.

Here’s a further breakdown of the Gators, who are 16-2.

-2-1 road games
-5-0 neutral site
-Quad 1 games: 4-2
-Quad 2 games: 3-0
-Quad 3 games: 3-0
-Quad 4 games: 6-0

In the NET, Auburn (17-1) is No. 1, followed in order by Duke (16-2), Houston (14-3) and Tennessee (17-2). The Tigers have thus far separated themselves from the pack with a 10-1 record vs. Quad 1 teams. Florida plays at Auburn on Feb. 8.

Why are these rankings important? Because the NET is weighed when “establishing a team’s resume” come tournament time for the tournament selection committee. From a 2019 NCAA.com story, “The goal of the NET was to produce a true ranking/sorting system for the selection committee for Selection Sunday. And while the NET is being released throughout the regular season … Valuing when a game is played is an individual choice of each member of the selection committee. But where the game was played and who it was against is used in determining the NET ranking, regardless of the time of the season.”

The NET Rankings, per NCAA.com, “includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.”

The Florida Gators’ most recent wins were significant

Here’s how “Quad” games are determined:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Using this metric, Texas, which is unranked in the AP Top 25, currently is No. 33 in the NET. So that counts as a Quad-2 win for the Gators.

“I thought we played incredibly hard,” Gold said after beating the Longhorns on Saturday. “We were not perfect. We had some silly turnovers in transition, some missed coverages here and there. But when we play with that level of effort, it allows us to make some mistakes and still be victorious. And I thought for us to win the game the way we did, and to extend it and win by 24 was a great statement coming back off Tuesday night.”
