Gators maintaining top-10 NCAA NET ranking ahead of Georgia game
The Florida Gators have dropped in the NET rankings since their close call at South Carolina on Wednesday. The good news? UF is down only from fifth to No. 6 — which isn’t all bad. Why should you care about the Net rankings? Because they are the NCAA’s primary sorting tool for evaluating teams and that matters when it comes to seeding at NCAA Tournament time. Right now, coach Todd Golden’s squad is in the hunt for a great landing spot as the Gators enter Saturday’s game against Georgia at home with a 17-2 overall recruit (4-2 in the SEC).
Here’s a further breakdown of Florida in the Net rankings:
-3-1 road games
-5-0 neutral site
-Quad 1 games: 4-2
-Quad 2 games: 4-0
-Quad 3 games: 3-0
-Quad 4 games: 6-0
In the NET, Auburn (17-1) is No. 1, followed in order by Duke (16-2), Houston (15-3) Tennessee (17-2) and Iowa State (16-2). The Tigers have thus far separated themselves from the pack with a 10-1 record vs. Quad 1 teams. Florida plays at Auburn on Feb. 8.
The NET is weighed when “establishing a team’s resume” come tournament time for the tournament selection committee. From a 2019 NCAA.com story, “The goal of the NET was to produce a true ranking/sorting system for the selection committee for Selection Sunday. And while the NET is being released throughout the regular season … Valuing when a game is played is an individual choice of each member of the selection committee. But where the game was played and who it was against is used in determining the NET ranking, regardless of the time of the season.”

The NET Rankings, per NCAA.com, “includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.”
The Florida Gators’ most recent wins were significant
Here’s how “Quad” games are determined:
- Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
- Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
- Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
- Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353
South Carolina (10-9), which is unranked in the AP Top 25, currently is No. 89 in the NET. So Florida’s 70-69 road win Wednesday over the Gamecocks counts as a Quad-2 victory for the Gators.
“Credit to South Carolina,” Golden said after the win. “You know, obviously they’ve struggled in terms of their win-loss record at the beginning of conference play, but that’s a really good team, very physical. They play with great poise. They have a great style, you know, they have a system and they controlled the game tonight is the bottom line. And the thing that I was really proud of our guys was their ability to adjust defensively. We went to the full-court press, which I thought really bothered them. We started turning them over a lot. Not something we do a lot, but they were able to execute and then down the stretch, our guys stayed the course, even when Davis hit the bank 3 to go up five with 1:10 to go, we executed a good 3 play to get Will a 3 in the corner. And then we got back in the press and they turned it over. And our guys just continued to find a way to win.”
