The Florida Gators, ranked sixth in the AP basketball poll this week, face a monumental task Saturday on the road in Auburn, Ala., where they will meet No. 1 Auburn. Both programs also are getting a ton of respect in the NET rankings. UF, 19-3 overall, 6-3 in the SEC, is at No. 5 while the Tigers (21-1, 9-0) are in the top spot.

Why should you care about the Net rankings? Because they are the NCAA’s primary sorting tool for evaluating teams and that matters when it comes to seeding at NCAA Tournament time. And right now, coach Todd Golden’s Florida squad is in the hunt for a great landing spot if it continues to play well.

Here’s a further breakdown of the Florida Gators in the Net rankings:

-3-2 road games
-5-0 neutral site
-Quad 1 games: 4-3
-Quad 2 games: 6-0
-Quad 3 games: 4-0
-Quad 4 games: 5-0

Now, here’s what Auburn has done:

-5-1 road games
-6-0 neutral site
-Quad 1 games: 12-1
-Quad 2 games: 3-0
-Quad 3 games: 2-0
-Quad 4 games: 4-0

The NET is weighed when “establishing a team’s resume” come tournament time for the tournament selection committee. From a 2019 NCAA.com story, “The goal of the NET was to produce a true ranking/sorting system for the selection committee for Selection Sunday. And while the NET is being released throughout the regular season … Valuing when a game is played is an individual choice of each member of the selection committee. But where the game was played and who it was against is used in determining the NET ranking, regardless of the time of the season.”

The NET Rankings, per NCAA.com, “includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.”

About the Florida Gators’ most recent win …

Here’s how “Quad” games are determined:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida beat Vanderbilt (16-6, 4-5) 86-75 on Tuesday in Gainesville. Because the Commodores are No. 46 in the NET, that counts as a Quad 2 win for the Gators. Florida has one win over a team currently in the top 5 in the NET this season; the Gators beat Tennessee, which sits at No. 4 in the NET, 73-43 on Jan. 7 at home.
