Saturday night’s UF-Texas A&M game in College Station, Texas, is not just a regular contest for Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway. It’s a homecoming of sorts. Lagway grew up roughly 70 miles away from the Texas A&M campus in the town of Willis.

Against the No. 5 Aggies, the sophomore signal caller will be one of UF’s three captains, the school announce Friday. The others are senior offensive guard Damieon George Jr. and junior safety Bryce Thornton. George also is a native Texan. He’s from Houston.

In Florida’s 29–21 upset win over No. 9 Texas last weekend, Lagway delivered arguably his best performance as a Gator. He completed 21 of 28 passes for 298 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception against the Longhorns. Outside of a fourth-quarter pick with UF leading by 15, he was nearly flawless.

He now has thrown for 988 yards, 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions this season.

This will be Lagway’s first game back in Texas since high school (he was injured when the Gators faced the Longhorns in Austin last year)

“I think it can be a positive,” Florida Gators coach Billy Napier said. “Anything that’s a motivator. …. It’s all going to be about how he prepares and how he executes presented with the opportunity. Maybe it’ll give him a little edge this week. I think certainly for me it would. Anytime we play some of these teams where I’m from, it’s definitely part of the puzzle. So I think it could be a positive.”

George has started each game this season as a right guard for the Gators. He now has 26 career starts as a Gator. Thornton has 18 tackles and three pass breakups this year.

The Florida Gators name different captains each game.

Last week, the honor went to junior defensive backs Jordan Castell and Sharif Denson, along with junior tight end Hayden Hansen. Against Miami, senior punter Tommy Doman, sophomore linebacker Myles Graham and senior center Jake Slaughter were Florida’s captains. Sophomore running back Jadan Baugh, senior kicker Trey Smack, and redshirt senior edge Tyreak Sapp served as the Florida captains for the LSU game.
