Gators OC Rob Sale breaks down UF's offensive scheme
Florida Gators offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Rob Sale spoke with the media Tuesday as the team reported for training camp.
UF is one month away from the season opener against Utah. Over the next four weeks, the identity of Sale’s offense will take shape in practice.
“We want to be able to dictate our style of play,” Sale told Gators Online and others. “We want to be able to run the ball, play action. We want to be able to create different tempos to put pressure on the defense.
“We want them to play the width of the field and the length of the field; we can win the game in many different ways if we need to throw it, we can throw it. If we need to run it more, run it more.”
That system flexibility was evident at Louisiana, where Florida coach Billy Napier went 40-12 in four years. Sale credited Napier for adapting to his personnel during the first season in 2018.
“Coach Napier was able to probably, in my opinion, win games we probably weren’t supposed to be in there by slowing the pace of the game,” he said. “And then we were able to put it all together, play complimentary football in all three phases.”
Sale still installing schemes
Sale was able to install most of his scheme during the spring, but there’s more to be added. With top players now identified, he and the staff can build the offense around those key pieces.

“There’s a little bit left, but we’ll hit reset.” he said. “There’s always game plan things that you’re putting in. But I would say, if I had to give a percentage, 80-85 percent is already in. So, we’ll go back and hit reset, install one and install two. And then things on our shelf that we did not install, we always got to go back and put it in.
“But first-year staff when you’re trying to come in here in spring ball, you’re trying to also install but identify who can play. Who can do what, and then what do you got to do in your recruiting needs to fill the roster.”
O’Cyrus Torrence ready for the run
The Florida running back room will be deep this season alongside dual-threat quarterback Anthony Richardson.
However, UF offensive guard O’Cyrus Torrence disagrees with the notion that the Gators will be “run heavy” on offense.
“We’re definitely going to run the ball, but there’s going to be a lot of depth with play action and then downfield plays I feel like,” he said. “And then with the staff and the people we have on the team from like the quarterback to the backfield to the receivers, I feel like we can do honestly everything. But more of running the ball, play action, just across-the-field type stuff and like setting up things along in the game and even along in the season.”
