Gators prepare for a top-10 showdown at Florida Ballpark with FSU
It doesn’t have to be football. It doesn’t have to be a top-10 matchup either. When the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles play each other in anything, there’s no love to be lost.
Tuesday at Florida Ballpark the No. 9 Florida Gators (13-4) will host the No. 8 Florida State Seminoles (10-5 | 2-1 ACC).
This will be a big week for the Gators with SEC play starting Friday in Tuscaloosa against Alabama. But first, the Sunshine Showdown will begin.

Seminoles last week
Florida State opened ACC play with a series win over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem featuring two wins on Sunday as part of a doubleheader due to weather. The Noles had not won a series at Wake Forest since 2014. They picked up a win on Tuesday over Florida Gulf Coast, 10-4. It was Tuesday night starter, Carson Montgomery’s first win of the season.
Montgomery isn’t your typical weekday starter. He has weekend rotation stuff. Montgomery was a freshman in 2021 but was the No. 3 rated pitcher by Perfect Game in the recruiting class.

The Gators have also faced Montgomery. In 2021 Montgomery finished one out shy of earning his first win against the Gators, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs in the Seminoles 10-2 win. He also did not allow an earned run at Florida on April 13, throwing 4.1 innings.
Gators last week
Florida posted a 3-1 week with a win over Jacksonville Tuesday and a series win over Seton Hall on the weekend. Rain played a major factor last week. Florida’s Wednesday game was postponed due to weather and Friday’s series opener turned into a Saturday doubleheader. Florida won both games on Saturday but fell 6-4 on Sunday.
The winning week did, however, vault Florida up two places and into the top-10 for the first time this season. The Gators moved from No. 11 to No. 9. in the D1Baseball.com rankings.
