GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The emotions will be high in the Little Apple on Saturday. The Florida Gators travel to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the Kansas State Wildcats in The Big 12/SEC Challenge. It will be the first time Keyontae Johnson faces his old team.

While Johnson crossing paths with UF will be the headline, the former Gator made it clear this week that there is no ill will held toward Florida.

“It was very tough, but they just had to what was best for them medically and what they felt was safe for me,” Johnson said of not being cleared by Florida. “There is no ill will or hate for them. I’m still a Gator for life.”

Johnson averaged 14.0 points per game and 7.1 rebounds as an All-SEC performer at Florida in 2019-20 before being named the 2020-21 Preseason SEC Player of the Year. He last played for Florida on December 12, 2021. He collapsed on the court coming out of a timeout and missed the rest of the year. Ultimately, Florida’s doctors and medical professionals wouldn’t clear him to play, so Johnson transferred.

He’s been sensational for the Wildcats this season. Through 20 games, Johnson is averaging career highs with 18.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 33.7 minutes per game.

Florida has five players that were on that 2020-21 team, Colin Castleton, Jason Jitoboh, Niels Lane, Alex Klatsky and Jack May. It will, undoubtedly, be an emotional night.

The Gators come into the game winners of five of their last six, while Kansas State has split its last four games.
