The Florida Gators got hot at the right time of the season and went from a bubble team to the No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Gators have earned the right to host, but that doesn’t make their road easy. The Gainesville Regional is one of the toughest in the country.

Florida plays host to Oklahoma, Liberty, and Central Michigan. Oklahoma is on a hot streak of its own and coming off of a Big 12 Tournament Championship. The Sooners, arguably, could be hosting its own Regional. Liberty beat Florida two out of three to start the 2022 season, and CMU is the only four-seed with 40-plus wins on the year.

As the No. 1 seed, the Gators will open the regional off against the four-seed Chippewas. That is also deceiving. CMU will throw Andrew Taylor in the opener. Taylor was the 2021 MAC Pitcher of the Year and the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year awards along with a spot on the All-MAC First Team. His 11 victories led the MAC, ranked No. 2 nationally and are the third-most in program history in a single season. Prior to the 2022 season, he was honored with All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), D1 Baseball, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Starting Sproat

That matchup made Kevin O’Sullivans’ decision to start his ace, Brandon Sproat.

“I actually thought about it briefly on Monday,” O’Sullivan said about possibly saving Sproat for the second game. “I just don’t think we’re in a spot, after watching Central Michigan, they’re certainly capable. They’re throwing their No. 1. They went on a run last year in the Notre Dame Regional. I don’t think, at this point in the season with where we’re at, I think Brandon gives is the best chance to win tomorrow night.”

And so it will be, ace against ace on Friday night.
