Florida Gators pitcher Hurston Waldrep drafted in first round by Atlanta
A second Florida player came off the board Sunday in the opening round of the MLB Draft, with Hurston Waldrep going No. 24 overall to the Atlanta Braves. He becomes the 19th Gator to get drafted in the first round and the 12th pitcher in program history.
Waldrep served as Florida’s Saturday starter this season after transferring from Southern Miss. He led the team with 156 strikeouts, a 4.16 ERA and a 10-3 record in 2023.
Waldrep earned 2023 First Team Preseason All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball for his play on the mound with the Gators. He’s the 11th-highest player to be drafted in team history and the sixth-highest pitcher out of 217 draft picks all-time.
The Thomasville, Ga. native returns to his home state with Braves as Florida’s ninth-highest selection across 101 draft picks under Kevin O’Sullivan. He’s the 21st Gators pitcher to be taken in the first five rounds since 2008.
Waldrep competed at Southern Miss for two seasons prior to Florida, earning Third Team All-American honors from D1Baseball in 2022.
