Ja'Markis Weston signs with New York Jets as undrafted free agent

In addition to seven draft picks, the Florida Gators had five players sign with NFL teams as undrafted free agents. One of them was EDGE/gunner Ja’Markis Weston.

Weston signed with the New York Jets on Saturday, Tom Pelissero first reported. Weston’s deal will include $200,000 guaranteed, according to Pelissero.

Weston spent six years with Florida, playing wide receiver, safety, linebacker and EDGE. He was one of UF’s top players on special teams.

Weston totaled 16 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble along with six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. He also had six kick returns for 85 yards and a 14-yard punt return.

Weston performed well at Florida’s Pro Day. He did 28 reps on the bench with a 29″ vertical and 4.59 40-yard dash. After his workout, UF coach Billy Napier predicted that he would get a shot in the NFL.

“First of all, Ja’Markis has been very selfless,” Napier said. “Goes from receiver to the secondary to linebacker/edge. He’s always been a very good special-teams player. That’s his ticket, right? He’s got to be a four-core teamer and then, okay, can he play DPR (defensive pass rush), can he be a SAM (line)backer, can he play stack backer?

“So, he’s definitely going to get his foot in the door because of all the production on special teams. But in general, I can’t say enough good things about the guy as a teammate. He’s well respected around the building and certainly around the players.”
