Florida Gators run-rule MSU in series opener with 7-run sixth inning

The Florida Gators extended their winning streak to six games on Friday night with the team’s first SEC road win in a series opener this season. After trailing through five frames, UF took the lead in the sixth with seven-run inning on eight hits — including six straight — en route to a 13-3 run-rule victory at Mississippi State.

The Gators overcame 11 strikeouts by MSU pitcher Pico Kohn to finish with 17 hits and three home runs, including two jacks and a team-high four hits by Brody Donay. Luke Heyman also hit a three-run homer in the sixth and Florida had a total of five doubles. UF’s Liam Peterson went six innings with six Ks and 95 pitches.

End of 8th: Florida 13, Mississippi State 3

Doney went yard again with a two-run shot for his second dinger and fourth hit of the game. The Bulldogs loaded the bases on closer Caden McDonald but then he threw back-to-back Ks before the game ended on a fly out.

End of 7th: Florida 11, Mississippi State 3

Ashton Wilson hit a leadoff double, Shelton singled and the Gators added two more runs. Billy Barlow took over on the mound and tossed two strikeouts in his first frame. Peterson finished with six Ks, seven hits, three runs and one walk in 6.0 innings (95 P, 60 S).

End of 6th: Florida 9, Mississippi State 3

The Bulldogs pulled Kohn after five frames and Florida made them pay with a seven-run inning. UF had six straight hits against MSU’s Stone Simmons, including doubles by Hayden Yost, Bobby Boser and Colby Shelton, and then Luke Heyman launched a three-run bomb. Peterson tossed his best inning with a 1-2-3 frame and two Ks. He’s up to six strikeouts and 95 pitches, tying his season high.

End of 5th: Mississippi State 3, Florida 2

The Gators connected on two hits and cut the deficit to one when Colby Shelton scored on a wild pitch. Peterson tossed his fourth strikeout of the game.

End of 4th: Mississippi State 3, Florida 1

The Bulldogs hit their second home run against Peterson, this time by Reed Stallman. Florida’s Hayden Yost singled and stole second but was stranded.

End of 3rd: Mississippi State 2, Florida 1

The Gators came up with a 6-4-3 double play and then second baseman Justin Nadeau laid out to make a great catch and throw to first to end the inning.

End of 2nd: Mississippi State 2, Florida 1

Brody Donay tied up the game with his 10th homer this year. Peterson received his first mound visit after allowing three singles and MSU scored on a fielder’s choice.

End of 1st: Mississippi State 1, Florida 0

UF starting pitcher Liam Peterson gave up a leadoff home run to Gehrig Frei. Florida’s Brendan Lawson had a double in the first but was stranded.
