Florida run-rules Dayton 13-1 to take series opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators run-ruled Dayton on Friday with a six-run sixth inning to take the series opener, 13-1 (7). UF had three runs apiece in the first two innings and added another in the fourth.
USF transfer Bobby Boser opened the scoring with a two-run shot to right field that traveled 364 feet with a 100 MPH exit velocity. It marked his second homer in as many games and Florida’s ninth of the season.
“I was just looking for something away, kind of move the runner and get a little baseball play,” Boser said. “Fortunately, he threw one up and I was able to kind of do something with it and get our guys going.”
The Gators finished with 10 hits, including two by both Blake Cyr and Brendan Lawson, and totaled nine strikeouts on the mound, led by five Ks from starting pitcher Liam Peterson in four scoreless frames.
“It was not an easy night to hit or pitch,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said of the cold weather. “Offensively, I thought our situational hitting was outstanding, the first couple innings especially. I think seven different players had RBIs (12 total), so we had production up and down the lineup.”
“So, it was a good night for us. Maybe the line looks a little better than the way we pitched probably, but the bottom line is we only gave up one run over seven. … (Peterson) made some big pitches when he needed to.”
Peterson earned his second win of the season and gave up just two hits. The Flyers loaded the bases in the fourth after his second walk, but he struck out the next battler to end the inning.
“I’m not thrilled by the performance by any means,” Peterson said. “There’s a lot of stuff that I could’ve done better, but you just ask for zeros at the end of the day. I would ideally want to go a little farther into the game, but four zeros is four zeros. But I think I can improve.”
The Gators got one inning each for RHP pitchers Jackson Barberi (1 K, 2 H), Caden McDonald (1 K, 3 H, 1 R) and Christian Rodriguez (2 K, 1 H), who made his UF debut and threw his first career strikeouts in the seventh.
Game 2 will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday’s finale is at 12 p.m. Both games will air on SEC Network+.
