Florida takes opener vs. Harvard with 12-0 shutout win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — After snapping a two-game skid Wednesday vs. FAU, the Florida Gators opened their final non-conference series Friday with a 12-0 win against Harvard.

The Gators secured the shutout victory behind 12 hits and 12 Ks from their pitching staff, including 11 strikeouts from starter Liam Peterson in five scoreless frames.

Due to the potential for severe weather on Sunday, Florida and Harvard will now play Games 2 & 3 on Saturday, with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Both games of the Saturday doubleheader will be seven-inning contests. The series finale is scheduled to follow roughly 45 minutes after.

END OF 6TH: FLORIDA 12, HARVARD 0

UF reliever Niko Janssens replaced Peterson in the sixth and tossed a 1-2-3 frame. “I thought Niko threw the ball good,” Kevin O’Sullivan said. Cyr had his second hit and Florida’s 12th of the game.

END OF 5TH: FLORIDA 12, HARVARD 0

Florida with a six-spot that included an RBI triple by Donay, an RBI double by Ty Evans and an RBI single by Blake Cyr. Peterson pitched his final scoreless frame and finished with 11 Ks, four hits and two walks.

END OF 4TH: FLORIDA 6, HARVARD 0

The Gators had a four-run fourth inning with a leadoff single by Landon Stripling and Colby Shelton’s RBI double to empty the bases. Peterson had another 1-2-3 frame on a double play.

END OF 3RD: FLORIDA 2, HARVARD 0

Peterson gives up two singles but then struck out two Crimson batters looking for his third K of the frame and eighth of the game. Then DH Brody Donay hit an RBI double to plate Bobby Boser after his double.

END OF 2ND: FLORIDA 1, HARVARD 0

Peterson had two more Ks to open his second hitless frame. Luke Heyman singled to right field for UF’s second hit, but he’s stranded after another fly out in the inning.

END OF 1ST: FLORIDA 1, HARVARD 0

UF pitcher Liam Peterson struck the first three Crimson batters, and then Colby Shelton drove in Florida’s first run with an RBI single to plate Hayden Yost from second after his leadoff walk.
