Florida Gators walk it off vs. GSU with grand slam for 12-1 run-rule win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators won their third straight home game in walk-off fashion on Tuesday. Luke Heyman ended the game with a grand slam in the seventh for a 12-1 run-rule victory over Georgia Southern.

Heyman finished with three hits to lead the Gators, who had 12 as a team. UF took a 3-0 lead in the second and traded runs with the Eagles in the third before scoring four runs apiece in the fifth and seventh innings.

Florida used five pitchers, with starter Alex Philpott striking out three and allowing three hits in 2.0 innings and Caden McDonald (3-0) earning the win. Georgia Southern went deep into its bullpen with seven different pitchers.

End of 7th: Florida 12, Georgia Southern 1

Christian Rodriguez replaced Barberi and threw a K for the final out. The Gators then loaded the bases on Jevarra Martin, GSU made its sixth pitching change and Heyman ended the game with a walk-off grand slam.

End of 6th: Florida 8, Georgia Southern 1

McCall Biemiller took over for Jackson Barberi and picked off a runner at first with one strikeout. The Eagles pitching staff tossed its second 1-2-3 frame in the last three innings, this time by Jax Lewis after a tough fifth.

End of 5th: Florida 8, Georgia Southern 1

Florida scored four hits on five hits after the Eagles made their fourth pitching change of the night. UF got three straight RBI singles from Colby Shelton, Brendan Lawson and Luke Heyman, with Lawson driving in two runs.

End of 4th: Florida 4, Georgia Southern 1

The Gators got their last out of the inning on a great throw by shortstop Colby Shelton to strand the Eagles’ runner on first base. Will Robbins tossed a 1-2-3 frame for GSU.

Both teams added a run in the third. Sean Smith doubled against UF’s Caden McDonald for GSU’s first score, and then Colby Shelton was walked with the bases loaded to bring home Blake Cyr.

The Gators scored three runs on four hits, including two straight RBI singles by Justin Nadeau and Bobby Boser. Philpott allowed two hits but tossed his third K to end the frame and strand both runners.

Brendan Lawson and Luke Heyman, who started at first base, hit back-to-back singles but were left stranded. Florida pitcher Alex Philpott struck out two after giving up a leadoff double.
