GAINESVILLE, Fla. — After the Florida clinched the series on Saturday, Miami took the finale Sunday with a 13-7 win to hand the Gators their first loss of the season.

The Florida Gators jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but their pitching fell apart as Miami plated 13 consecutive runs from the fourth inning to the top of the eighth to build a nine-run lead.

Florida (11-1) finished with 12 hits, including two-run homer by Brody Donay in the third. After that, UF produced just one hit (a Donay single) over four frames while the Hurricanes (8-4) scored two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, two more in the sixth and four in eighth on 14 hits.

It was a tough outing for UF starter Jake Clemente, who only went four innings with six strikeouts, two hits, four runs and four walks, as well as Billy Barlow (five hits, three earned runs and one K in two innings) and Jacob Gomerg (five hits, four runs, one walk and one K in the eighth).

“It’s disappointing. We got out to a 4-0 lead after three and it just kind of fell apart on the mound,” Florida Gators coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “We need our starter to go six innings, bottom line, and kind of piece that thing together to get the last nine outs. Just too many free passes. I think between walks and hit-by-pitches, they had 10 on the day.

“We walked two guys in with the bases loaded. It’s really the first time all year that we fell apart on the mound. We’ll have to look at the starting rotation stuff, but we’ve been pretty clear with the pitchers we start on the weekend that we expect you to go six innings with three runs or less.”

The Gators were unable to sweep Miami for the first time since 2020, but they won the series for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings. The all-time series is now retied at 136-136-1 after UF held the advantage Saturday for the first time since 1969.
