OMAHA, Neb. —  Florida’s national championship hopes still are alive, but the road to a title just got a whole lot tougher.

The Gators on Saturday night lost to LSU 4-3 in 11 innings in Game 1 of the College World Series finals. It’s a best two-of-three series, meaning Florida will need to beat the Tigers on Sunday, then again Monday to claim the program’s second title.

The hero Saturday for LSU: Cade Beloso.

His solo shot in the top of the 11th broke a 3-all tie. Just an inning earlier, the Gators put runners on first and second with one out but Wyatt Langford and Jac Caglianone, arguably two of the best hitters in the college game, both flied out to end the threat.

Florida falls to 53-16. LSU also is 53-16.

Here’s a look back at how it all unfolded.

CWS FINALS PREVIEW: Playing in the program’s 13th CWS including the eighth under Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan, the SEC Regular-Season Cham- pion Gators are playing in the fourth CWS final in team history after going 3-0 in Omaha for the second time ever (2011). UF began with a come-from-behind, walk-off win over No. 11 Virginia (6-5, first walk-off win in CWS in team history) before beating Oral Roberts and No. 17 TCU in one-run affairs as well. Florida takes an eight-game, postseason winning streak into the championship series vs. LSU, a rematch of the 2017 title game. The two last faced off in Gainesville during the 2022 regular season, with the Tigers winning two of three. UF is 23-19 vs. LSU in the O’Sullivan era including 5-4 at neutral sites.

HISTORIC CAMPAIGN: UF’s 53 victories are tied for the most in a single season in team history (2011).

FLOMAHA: Florida is 24-24 all-time at the College World Series, having made a nation-leading eight trips out of a possible 15 since 2008: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2023.

THE BIG PITCH: In 10 NCAA Tournament games, Florida has pitched three shutouts and held opposing teams to 23 total runs on 72 hits, equating to a 2.33 ERA and .222 batting average against in 89 innings. In that span, UF pitchers have a 3.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio, having fanned 101 against 31 free passes. Florida has now pitched eight shutouts on the season, which is tied for fourth nationally.

SEC’S FINEST: Florida won its 16th SEC Regular Season Championship in program history including the team’s sixth under O’Sullivan. After being swept on the road at South Carolina, the Gators went 11-3. That includes 9-3 in SEC play down the stretch to win UF’s sixth overall conference title in 2023. That total leads the SEC
