GAINESVILLE, Fla. — There haven’t been many offenses better than the LSU Tigers this season and quarterback Jayden Daniels is the reason. The Heisman frontrunner was knocked out of LSU’s loss to Alabama last Saturday with an apparent concussion and did not finish the game.

“He’s day-to-day,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said. “This is a process. He has made improvements. He has made some progress.”

LSU writer Shea Dixon reported that the Tigers do not practice on Mondays but that Daniels would go through another round of medical tests on Tuesday. Daniels would need to clear concussion protocol in order to practice and ultimately play against the Florida Gators on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

Daniels has completed 72.1% of his pass attempts for 2,792 yards, 27 touchdowns and just four interceptions on the season. He ranks fifth in yards thrown and second in touchdowns in the country. Daniels is also a dynamic runner with 684 yards and six touchdowns on the ground this season.

What if Jayden Daniels can’t play this week?

The name will sound familiar to Florida fans. If Daniels cannot play this week, LSU will turn to redshirt sophomore quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. His father, Doug Nussmeier, was Florida’s offensive coordinator under Jim McElwain from 2015-17. Garrett has played in just five games this season, completing 17-of-33 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown. He played the final 13 minutes of LSU’s loss to Alabama.

“I think every week is important for him in terms of preparation,” Kelly told local reporters on Monday. “We will take Jayden’s situation day-by-day. We are hoping things keep moving in the right direction. Garrett really knows there are things he has to work on during the week, so we will be a lot more focused. He knows he’s a snap away from getting into the game.”

With Daniels’ availability in question, the Gators will have to prepare for both quarterbacks this week.

“I think Nussmeier obviously has been a very productive player as well. I think if you really dig into the tape, when he’s been given opportunities, he’s done a nice job moving their team. So I think we’ll prepare for both. They’re definitely different players, but they’re both very capable,” Napier said on Monday. “And I think ultimately they do a nice job distributing the ball to the skill they have. This group of receivers, the backs, the tight end, and I think the offensive line. That’s one of the best offenses if not the best offense in the entire country at this point.”
