WATCH: Max Brown talks spring practice, playing two sports at UF
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Gators redshirt freshman quarterback Max Brown met with the media for the first time Saturday following Florida’s seventh practice of spring training camp.
Brown did not appear in any games last season and redshirted, and this is his first spring on campus. He is one of three scholarship QBs, along with Graham Mertz and Jack Miller III.
As a high school senior, Brown was the Oklahoma District 3-3A MVP after throwing for 2,750 yards and 41 touchdowns with 1,343 rushing yards and 20 scores. He led Oklahoma District 3-3A MVP to a 13-1 record and 3A state runner-up finish.
In the video below, Brown discusses his decision to sign late with Florida in the 2022 class, how spring ball is going and being a dual-sport athlete at UF.
Max Brown quotes
On his comfort level in Year 2:
Brown: “It’s a lot different. Like you said, a lot of comfortability getting into the second year of being in the program with Napier. I think that’s really played a role coming into it, being more comfortable. Making plays, being able to play fast, play my game. I think that’s really, really the part I’ve played coming into it. I think that’s really been the most important thing.”

On what he brings to the offense:
Brown: “Just being able to make all the throws on the field. Being able to hurt a defense with my legs, I feel like that plays another role coming into it. Just being decisive, making plays, being a playmaker. You know, being able to throw the ball down the field I think plays another big role.”
On where he’s improved the most:
Brown: “Really probably with my comfortability in the pocket and understanding and going through progressions, seeing reads, seeing defenses, seeing fronts. I think that’s really been the biggest transition coming into college football is knowing fronts, knowing defenses but really just getting comfortable with the offense and being able to play fast. And when you play fast, being able to make plays.”
On what he wants to show this spring:
Brown: “Just to keep showing people that I’m here to compete, man. That’s what I love to do. I think playing two sports has always been a competitive mindset of mine. I’ve always been competitive, that’s how I’ve been raised. I love to compete, no matter what that’s what I love to do. No matter what circumstance I’m in, I’m gonna compete and I think that’s what I really want to show.”
On playing both football and baseball:
“Time management is the biggest thing. Just, what am I doing at this time, when am I at baseball? Communication is a real big thing and coach [Billy] Napier, coach [Kevin] O’Sullivan were really flexible and really good with the scheduling side of it. Coach Napier really got my schedule solidified coming into it and coach O’Sullivan was really understanding. Them two being at Clemson together was kind of another big thing. They already had past experiences with each other. So, I think going into it was kind of an easy transition into football and baseball.”
