The Florida Gators have landed a key commitment on the defensive line, as Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville standout Jamir Perez announced his pledge on Sunday after wrapping up his official visit to Gainesville.

Perez, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound defensive lineman, made the trip south to see what the Gators had to offer and it didn’t take long for him to make up his mind. He toured the campus, spent time with the coaching staff, and got a closer look at the team’s facilities.

By the end of the visit, the Midwest native decided Gainesville was going to be his home away from home. He checks in a 3-star prospect and the No. 65 defensive lineman in the On3 Industry Ranking.

“For me, see, I’m from Ohio. I had Ohio State and being an Ohio kid, that’s usually the dream, but I always dreamed of playing in the SEC,” Perez told Gators Online’s Blake Alderman when asked about his commitment. “I feel like I’m an SEC type of body, I’m an SEC type of player. Florida just made it home.”

Another major factor in Perez feeling comfortable enough to make a commitment are his relationships with multiple coaches. That includes defensive line coach Gerald Chatman.

“I saw the vision, coach Chatman made me see the vision, everybody else made me see the vision. I’m home,” said Perez. “I told coach Napier and he was happy. I told a couple of the players here last night that I was going to do it. Once I told coach, he was hype about it and ready for it. Now, it’s time to put in that work.”

Jamir Perez will be an early enrollee for the Florida Gators

Additional notable offers for Perez include Ohio State, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt and Purdue. He had planned to visit each of those programs officially, but that’s no longer the case. That is huge news for Florida.

Known for his strength, quickness, and ability to make plays in the backfield, Perez has been a leader for Glenville and one of the top defensive prospects in the Midwest. His addition gives Florida a physical presence up front and adds more depth for the feature.

Billy Napier and his staff have been pushing hard on the recruiting trail, and this commitment shows that the Gators could be gaining momentum. Perez becomes the first out-of-state target to choose Florida this cycle, showing the staff’s ability to reach beyond the Southeast for talent.
