Northern Illinois EDGE George Gumbs Jr. commits to Florida
More defensive depth is on the way for the Gators, as Northern Illinois EDGE George Gumbs Jr. has committed to Florida.
Gumbs, 6-foot-4, 242 pounds, had been committed to Cincinnati since Dec. 16 before opting for the SEC moments ago. This comes after an eye-opening experience in Gainesville for his official visit.
During the 2023 season, Gumbs recorded 34 tackles (15 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles for the 7-6 Huskies. He previously played tight end and transitioned to defense prior to last season.
This is an impressive athlete with size just scratching the surface of what he can become. When you combine that with the first-year production on defense, it’s no surprise numerous programs came calling for Gumbs’ services.

Tulsa expected to fire head coach
A redshirt sophomore who graduated from Chicago (Ill.) Simeon, Gumbs was a 3-star prospect and the 205th-ranked wide receiver in the 2021 class. That is according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
That high school projection alone shows you what type of athlete UF is getting in the trenches. Gumbs was also a team captain, so that’s intriguing to a coaching staff too.
After appearing in four games during his redshirt season, Gumbs saw time in eight games in 2022. He finished the season with four receptions for 44 yards, having lined up at tight end and on the kickoff return and field goal units.
All in all, Gumbs appeared in 23 games for the Huskies and has two years of eligibility remaining.
