Florida Gators to hire Deron Wilson as DB coach

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators are expected to hire Deron Wilson, Georgia State defensive coordinator, as defensive backs coach, Gators Online has learned. He will replace Will Harris, who left the Gators for a position with the Miami Hurricanes last week.
Wilson was hired four weeks ago as Georgia State’s DC after two years as the Arkansas secondary coach. He has eight years of collegiate coaching experience, including a stint with Billy Napier and the Gators.
During his first season with the Razorbacks, their pass defense ranked fourth in the SEC and 32nd in the FBS (202.8 yards per game). They also ranked No. 3 in the SEC and 39th nationally in interceptions (12).
Wilson spent the 2022 season at Florida as a quality control analyst and coached the Gators’ cornerback position. During his one year in Gainesville, he worked alongside cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond.
Prior to joining the UF staff, Wilson spent two seasons as the DC at McNeese (2020-21). He coached at UTSA for four seasons (2016-19), spending the final two as the Roadrunners’ cornerbacks coach.
Deron Wilson background
Wilson was a standout cornerback at Southern Miss from 2010-12 and a Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List honoree before an ankle injury sidelined him for his senior season in 2013. He helped lead the Golden Eagles to consecutive bowl games while starting 39 straight games.
The New Orleans, La. native was a Phil Steele Freshman All-American and earned Conference USA All-Freshman Team and second-team all-conference accolades in 2010. He registered 35 tackles, three interceptions, 12 pass breakups, one blocked punt and a pair of defensive scores.
As a sophomore, he helped the Golden Eagles to a C-USA title with 75 tackles, four interceptions and a team-best 17 passes defended to earn second-team all-league honors from Phil Steele. He was part of secondary that broke the NCAA record for interceptions returned for touchdowns with eight.
